Daikin Applied designs, manufacturers and sells heating, ventilation and air conditioning products, systems, parts and services for commercial buildings. The company's facility in Faribault is located at 300 24th Street NW. This is a largely industrial area, although it is bounded by homes to the east. What's the problem? In 1994, a trichloroethylene (TCE) release was discovered that created a shallow plume of contaminated groundwater moving toward the residential area to the east.
TCE is a chemical commonly used to degrease metal parts. At that time, the parent company, the Snyder General Corporation, entered into the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's (MPCA) Voluntary Investigation and Cleanup so that they could get the technical assistance needed to help define the boundaries of any groundwater and soil contamination.Because drinking water supplies were not affected and exposure to contaminated soil was not an issue, is was determined that no further action was needed at the site. But since that time, it has been discovered that vapors from contaminated groundwater can rise up through the soil and enter homes and buildings through cracks in the foundation, around pipes, or through drain systems.
The vapors can then contaminate indoor air. This process — when pollution moves from air spaces in soil to indoor air — is called vapor intrusion. For more information about vapor intrusion investigations, please see the. Health concernsWhen chemical vapors enter buildings through the foundation, the amount in indoor air is usually not high enough to affect most people’s health. The possible health effects from breathing TCE depends on the amount in indoor air, how long people breathe it, and whether and when a pregnant woman is exposed. The Minnesota Department of Health is most concerned about women in the first trimester of pregnancy because TCE exposures may increase the risk of heart defects to the baby.Exposure to TCE for a long period of time may also affect the immune system.
Long-term exposures to TCE may also increase the risk of certain types of cancer based on studies in workers or animals breathing very high levels of these contaminants (thousands of times greater than what may be found at vapor intrusion sites). For more information regarding health and vapor intrusion please go to the. What's being done?In 2015, the MPCA's Site Assessment Program tested for TCE soil vapors in the right of way along 2nd Avenue NW to determine if a TCE vapor area of concern existed. The company was contacted and they agreed to conduct more vapor investigations adjacent to the site.Since October 2015, the Daikin Applied-Faribault industrial facility and the 13 homes adjacent to it have had soil vapors underneath foundations tested in order to better determine the scope of the problem and provide mitigation as necessary. Vapor intrusion mitigation systems are similar to those installed to address radon problems in basements or enclosed spaces. The eastern portion of the industrial facility and four residential units were tested and showed elevated TCE vapor concentrations. Mitigation systems were installed in the buildings. Additional soil vapor testing beneath building foundations is necessary to complete the definition of the TCE vapor area of concern.
